Special Tip when using these basic german numbers with nouns

Eins is used with neutral nouns.

Ich hätte gern eins. = I'd like one (refers to a neutral object – eins becomes ein when put before masculine nouns. It can also be used or translated as 'a'.

ein Geschenk = one (a) present. Eine is used with feminine nouns. You can also translate it as 'a'.

eine Schule = one (a) school.
When you use numbers which are higher than one, the nouns will switch to the plural, as in English.
drei Schulen = three schools
