Learn German Online

Determine your Language Learning Type

Probably you would like to learn German online if you're reading this, and if that's the case, then I can assure you, you've come to the right place.

Of course, as you may well have noticed already, the internet is full of options for learning German online, and while this can certainly be a good thing, it also has its downside, in that the sheer amount of choices can prove to be somewhat overwhelming.

Rather than waste anymore words, let's take a look at some of the most important factors to keep in mind when searching for the ideal learning experience.

What Sort of Learner Are You?

Generally speaking, you get three types of learners - visual learners, auditory learners, and kinesthetic learners. Ideally, you need to determine what category you fall into prior to deciding which type of language tool to opt for.

By knowing what sort of learner you are, you'll be in a much better position to maximize your results, and the better your results are, the more chance there is that you'll stay motivated.

You do however need to bear in mind that not everyone falls into one of the three categories. To the contrary, the vast majority of people are actually a combination of all three.

Visual Learners

If you're in this category, you're the type of person who learns best by means of using visual learning material. You're the sort of person who can benefit enormously from taking notes, watching visual presentations, and also from demonstrations.

People who are said to have a "photographic memory" are in this group, given that they only need to see new information in order to memorize it.

If you want to learn German online, and you consider yourself a visual learner, you'll almost certain find videos to be your best choice.

If you'd like to see whether or not this approach might be the best option for you, please take a look at the on our german video section on this website.

You're also more than welcome to subscribe to our Learngermanfree Youtube Channel.

As you can well imagine, if you're a visual learner, you'll also stand to benefit from the use of flash cards, where you'll have an opportunity to memorize German words, and then reproduce them yourself afterwards.

If you're keen to get going, you can do so right away simply by going to our learn German free section:

As a visual learner, you'll also benefit from playing interactive German games, and in fact, such games are a perfect addition the whole visual learning experience.

Auditory Learners

People who are auditory learners do best if they actually get to listen to new material, as opposed to seeing new material. If you fall into this category, learning German online is certainly not impossible, but it may be a better idea to enroll in a class where German is taught in the traditional manner.

The reason for this being that auditory learners tend to excel more when they learn in a class or group environment where there's a lot of auditory stimulation.

To maximize results, auditory learners should always try to secure a place in the front of the class, as close to the teacher as possible. Furthermore, learners in this category need to focus on repeating everything they learn to themselves, and also in their own words, and this can greatly improve memory retention.

Recommended learning aids for auditory learners would include things like:

- Watching videos
- Recording classes/lectures
- Taking part in German group discussions
- Repeating German words and phrases with closed eyes
- The use of audio tapes for the purpose of practicing
- Recording notes you have written onto tape

A very useful resource for learners within this group would be the "Deutsch warum nicht" podcast from www.dw-world.de(itunes). This course is split into four sections with each section comprising 26 lessons with dialogue, audio, and various exercises for learning German. The course itself has been produced by Deutsche Welle and the Goethe Institute.

Kinesthetic Learners

Kinesthetic learners learn best by means of a hands-on approach. Most people in this group are highly energetic and as a result, they often find it difficult to sit still in one place for extended periods of time.

These are individuals who for the most part would learn more by putting on a play than they would from watching videos. Interestingly enough, it's not uncommon for people in this group to play loud music while they're actually studying, whereas for many other learners, the loud music would prove to be a huge distraction. Unfortunately, if you believe you're a kinesthetic learner, learning German online is almost certainly not your best option.

Recommended learning aids for kinesthetic learners would include things like:
- Enjoying short breaks to Germany
- Playing German memory or language games
- Using German language flash cards
- Visiting German attractions such as museums for example
- Enrolling in a German lab class

Learn German online & Combination Learners

If you have reason to believe you're a combination learner, you may want to experiment with all the options mentioned above in order to determine what type of combination actually works best for you.

If you're a social sort of person, you may even have a great experience joining us on Facebook in our "Learngermanfree Facebook" community.

Bottom Line

Above all else, I'd personally like to wish you the best of luck, and I sincerely hope some of the above suggestions may prove helpful to you in your quest to learn German online.
