Fundamental part of the vocabulary process
Learning colors in German is a fundmental part of the vocabulary building process.
How do we use the german colors in sentences and speech?
When used as an adjective the colour is placed before the noun like in English:
a black cat
the German say: eine schwarze Katze.
• ...the blue sky in German is...der blaue Himmel
• the red wine in German becomes ... der rote Wein
• the green frog in German becomes ..der grüne Frosch.
Colors & Gender in German
... and of course colors, being German adjectives, are adepted to the noun when it is masculine, feminine, neutral or plural so that:
while yellow in German is gelb...
...the yellow flower in German is "die gelbe Blume" the "gelb" changing to "gelbe" because this is the feminine/masculine/neutral ending. Der gelbe Mond (the yellow moon). Das gelbe U-Boot (the yellow submarine)
Plurals and German colors
Likewise the yellow flowers in German are:
Die gelben Blumen.
In this case the plural of flower is Blumen, and it is feminine so we have the yellow taking a plural feminine form... "gelben".
The plural masculine form would also be "gelben". "Die gelben Stiefel" - The yellow boots. The same is true for the plural neutral form. "Die gelben Bücher" - The yellow books.
