German Pyramids from Erzgebirge

German Christmas Traditions and Decorations

The German pyramids - also known as multitiered candle pyramids - are "Christmas time" wonders with tradition. They are crafted of finest hardwoods and have always been a wonderful christmas decoration in Germany.

There is no question - such a pyramid makes a fantastic German gift not only for the tradition-oriented person. Read here more about christmas pyramids from Germany and which one to buy. Get in the following a first impression.

You may also click on the movie below and enjoy it!

First developed in the region of Erzgebirge

These pyramids (Weihnachtspyramide) were for the first time crafted in the Erzgebirge. This Erz mountain region is situated in Saxony/Sachsen, a state in East Germany. In the late 1700s they were used as a cheap replacement for a Christmas tree in real.

Material and Function

A traditional German pyramid can have two to five levels and is made of wood. The heat which comes from the candles turns a rotor (windmill-like) "on the roof" of the pyramid. By this the pyramid revolves and rings its chimes. This leads to romantic light shows in the room.

Such pyramid gifts today cost minimum 10 Euros. Depending on their elaboration they can be even more expensive. By the way, die you know that the Erzgebirge region is also renowned for nutcrackers?

A handful good german manufacturers

The Christmas pyramid soon reached other parts of Germany.
Ande yet, only a handful of small German manufacturers craft these miniscule wooden creations. You should select only the best, with brands like Flath & Sohn, KWO and Richard Glässer you can't go wrong. You will find some of their creations in the carousel widget above.
