First developed in the region of Erzgebirge
These pyramids (Weihnachtspyramide) were for the first time crafted in the Erzgebirge. This Erz mountain region is situated in Saxony/Sachsen, a state in East Germany. In the late 1700s they were used as a cheap replacement for a Christmas tree in real.
Material and Function
A traditional German pyramid can have two to five levels and is made of wood. The heat which comes from the candles turns a rotor (windmill-like) "on the roof" of the pyramid. By this the pyramid revolves and rings its chimes. This leads to romantic light shows in the room.
Such pyramid gifts today cost minimum 10 Euros. Depending on their elaboration they can be even more expensive. By the way, die you know that the Erzgebirge region is also renowned for
nutcrackers?
