German Life Magazine
Stern
Stern (Star) is flashy, irreverent, and resilient. Filled with color photos, it offers hard-news coverage as well as lighter journalist fare. Its slant is generally libertarian while occasionally straying to the left. However, its content tends to be all-inclusive of political leanings.
Der Spiegel
Der Spiegel (The Mirror) is a weekly news magazine that strongly resembles a newspaper. Thoughtful and well-researched articles are one of its hallmarks, making it one of the largest and most influential publications in Europe.
Der Spiegel
Reader’s Digest Deutschland
Reader’s Digest Deutschland (formerly known as Das Beste) features monthly articles and information written for a German audience. It is not a straight translation of the familiar English language version but rather showcases original German articles and reprints.
Focus
Focus is a relative newcomer to the German magazine news format. While often reviled for its breezier treatment of the news, its appearance in 1993 caused competitors to change their page layouts and style to reflect the changing tastes of readers.
Bunte
Bunte is a weekly magazine full of color photos. Its content usually covers celebrity gossip, but is considered to be of higher quality and sophistication than its competitors. It defies categorization, as it covers hard news and women’s issues, too.
Burda Mode
Burda Mode, launched in 1949, is a women’s fashion magazine offering highly prized sewing and needlework patterns. Targeted to the make-it-yourself segment, the patterns are known for their ability to be adjusted for a perfect fit.
Wirtschaftswoche
Wirtschaftswoche is a weekly German business magazine offering economic and financial background and commentary. It tends to have a liberal slant with a focus on how the global economy impacts business.
Deutschland
Deutschland is published by the German government and includes a great deal of cultural, business, politics, and science. A bi-monthly German magazine, it features a wide array of photos and illustrations.
Die Zeit
Die Zeit (The News) is a liberal intellectual weekly that has been transformed into a respected modern German magazine (or newspaper, depending on one’s view). Its heroic physical size and in-depth articles are responsible for the confusion.
Birgitte
The german magazine Brigitte is a long-time favorite of German women. The publication covers everything from diet to cultural concerns. Its content and layout would not be foreign to an English-speaking woman.
