German Family Named Loew

by Alice Loew
(Bridgeton, Cumberland County, NJ, USA)

I have hand-me-down stories about my husband's great grandfather, Adam Loew, but I cannot verify anything about his ancestors. The story is told that he and 3 brothers came into Baltimore as stowaways on ship to escape the German Military. All the US Census records show him as being born in Wuettemberg, Germany of German parents and that he was a naturalized citizen of the US. That cannot be verified either. He is supposed to have arrived about 1856 and was a farmer in Cumberland County, New Jersey. No one in the family seems to know the names of his parents or brothers. I sure would like to know where to look to find something. I even wonder if he might have changed his name.
