German Chocolate Cakes

The origins

Contrary to what some may believe, German chocolate cakes did not originate in Germany. The name of this savoury dessert actually came from Sam German who created a baking chocolate in 1852 called German’s Sweet Chocolate. There were many different recipes passed from one home to another in the early 1900’s and this kind of cake quickly became an American favourite.



Sam German: Developer of the famous cake

The first published German chocolate cake recipe didn’t appear until 1957. Once this delightful baking recipe was discovered in the Dallas newspaper, these cakes were baking in ovens across the nation.

German Chocolate Cake – I

Ingredients:

½ cup German sweet chocolate
1 cup butter
4 eggs, separated and whites stiffly beaten
1 cup sugar
2 ½ cups flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
1 tsp vanilla
½ cup water
1 cup buttermilk
Boil water and melt chocolate. Combine sugar and butter until fluffy. Mix in vanilla and egg yolks, and then fold in melted chocolate. Add four, salt, and baking soda,slowly stirring in buttermilk. Blend in egg whites. Line three cake pans with wax paper and fold batter into pans. Bake 30 to 35 minutes in a 200°C oven. Frost cake tops with coconut pecan icing without frosting the sides.


Cake Recipe II – Quick and easy

Easiest Ever German Chocolate Cake You Will Need:

1 Box German Chocolate Cake Mix
1 cup coconut
1 cup chopped pecans
1 cup softened cream cheese
½ cup butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar

Spread coconuts and pecans in the bottom of a round cake pan that has been lightly greased and floured. Prepare cake mix according to package directions and fold into pan. Combine butter with sugar and cream cheese. Drop spoon sized balls of the mixture evenly on the top of the cake. Bake at 350° for about 45 minutes. Allow cake to cool before cutting.


Scrumptious Cake Recipe III

You will need:

¼ cup semisweet chocolate pieces
¼ cup unsweetened chocolate pieces
½ cup water
4 large eggs, separated
1 cup butter, unsalted and softened
1 cup milk
1 tsp vanilla
1 ½ cup sugar, separate ¼ cup
2 cups flour
½ tsp salt
1 tsp baking powder
1 tsp baking soda

Combine chocolate and water and simmer over low heat until chocolate melts. Blend 1 ¼ cups of sugar and butter until fluffy. Stir in chocolate. Beat egg yolks into mixture one at a time.

In a separate bowl, combine dry ingredients. Combine milk and vanilla. Stir both mixtures into batter, alternating between liquid and dry. Beat egg whites in another bowl and combine with remaining sugar until stiff, folding into batter. Pour batter into a cake pan that has been greased and floured. Bake at 200° until done and toothpick comes out clean. Allow cake to cool before icing.
