Get here a short overview of some popular German childrens books translated into English. Our small selection ranges from typical german classics up to modern runaway trends.
Max and Moritz by Wilhelm Busch A German Classic
Although not the same type of books, "Max and Moritz" by Busch reached once in Germany the same level as "Alice in Wonderland" by Lewis Carroll in the world of English language. Wherever an English teacher would quote Lewis Carroll's "Alice", a German teacher is likely to quote Busch. A great classic book of "nursery ryhmes" for spoiled children to show them what happens to those that are nasty.
Bottom Line: Excellent stuff for your children if you are able to explain the fine punchlines. For the beginning I recommend to show Max and Moritz as "very cheeky" and continue from there. You have fullfilled your mission when your children begin to grasp that the grinder is even more nasty (adult) than the two boys.
The Struwwelpeter by Heinr Hoffmann
This book shows dangerous situations for children...and their consequences. Today kids get away with everything. While TV commercials approve kids to break things and spill, they weren't spoiled in the nineteenth century the way they were today. This book tells the truth. If you don't look where you walk, you will fall. If you play with the fire, you will get hurt. This German kids bookdoesn't shield kids from the reality today. A book for every child
Inkheart (Das Tintenherz) by Cornelia Funke
Inkheart is in my opinion the German answer to Harry Potter. I really loved to read that book! It was not easy to put it away every evening. Everyone who enjoys reading fairy tales should have it. I think children from age 10 can have fun by reading this book!
